In my natural state, I have a hard time with the concept of hope. It feels silly and unrealistic to expect good in situations. I would rather expect the worst and be surprised than expect the best and be hurt. It is a constant struggle to keep my eyes fixated on a goal that is higher than my present status and tether myself to a modicum of hope.

I used to think the scariest place to be was alone. Now I know the scariest place to be is among community. I am terrified at having people know me. Is it better to be known or to be accepted? Is it ever possible to have both? My experience says no. My heart says yes. I am at odds with my own history. It tells me that alone is safe. While that may be true, alone is also a kind of comfortable death. Do I want to die in comfort? Or truly live through the exploration of my pain and vulnerability in the midst of people who are also doing the same?

This painting was started in May. Before I laid a single brushstroke, I had the title in mind. It just felt right. Then a few weeks later, a close family friend died. I had no idea that the title would become so meaningful. The painting is now owned by his widow.
